Your consultant will talk through your reasons, examine you and explain whether circumcision or another option, such as frenuloplasty, is the right choice, and which type of anaesthetic suits you.
A different procedure
Frenuloplasty
Frenuloplasty is a separate, smaller procedure that releases a tight frenulum (the band of skin under the head of the penis) without removing the foreskin. If a tight frenulum is your only problem, it may be all you need. Your consultant will advise which procedure suits you.
Histology (£275) is only charged if your consultant advises sending tissue for testing. Frenuloplasty (£695) is a separate procedure from circumcision.

Possible risks include bleeding, infection, swelling, changes in sensation and an uneven cosmetic result. Your consultant will go through these with you.

Should I choose local or general anaesthetic?
Many men are comfortable with local anaesthetic, where the area is numbed and you're awake. If you'd prefer to be asleep, general anaesthetic is available. Your consultant will talk it through with you.
Does it hurt?
The anaesthetic means you shouldn't feel pain during the procedure. Most men have some soreness and swelling for a few days afterwards, which is usually managed with simple painkillers.
How long is the recovery?
Most men need a few days off work. Sexual activity is usually avoided for around four to six weeks while you heal. You'll have phone support for six weeks and a review at two weeks.
What's the difference between circumcision and frenuloplasty?
Circumcision removes the foreskin. Frenuloplasty (£695) is a smaller procedure that releases a tight frenulum and leaves the foreskin in place. Your consultant will advise which suits you.
When is histology needed?
Sometimes your consultant will advise sending the removed tissue to a laboratory for testing. If so, histology costs £275.
